FOR GARAGE MAGAZINE'S COLLABORATION WITH BEATS AUDIO, I COMPOSED THE SOUND DESIGN TO MATCH THE COVERS FEATURING KENDALL JENNER & JOAN SMALLS.
KENDALL JENNER

JOAN SMALLS

The vision was for the models to be living, breathing organisms consumed by the nature of the visuals. I started my treatment by giving each one her own sonic palette, based on her individual VFX and the Garage Magazine covers. Beats were provided by Grammy-winning producer, Alex Da Kid.
For Kendall, her wiry and scribbling VFX set a metallic and crisp tone. With that in mind, I tried to create a sort of artificially intelligent sound, and drew reference and influence from Shannon Mills's work in Lucy. Ultimately, I incorporated the organic and the digital for a texture that had life.
Joan was less simple, and what began as a smoky, voluminous sound palette transformed into an explosive electrical current, pulsing around her. In finding and recording sound, I was tasked with making electricity "sexy," and I decided to err on the dangerously volatile side. Striking, I know.
